THE WATERCOURSE OF MEDIA TRIAL AND ITS REPUTATIONAL INJURY

Image
Sometimes in 1986, the NTA Newsline repeatedly regaled Nigerians with the confession of a supposed notorious armed robber called Yemoo. A muscular, well-built guy with biceps. On Yemoo’s face and neck were all manner of marks, mementos  of various physical skirmishes. Each time he appeared on the television, Yemoo who regal  of his supposed various robbery exploits. Eventually, he was charged before the Ikeja Robbery and Firearms Tribunal, then headed by Justice Waidi Oshodi, who usually did not waste time in condemning robbery accused to death by firing squad. But after the trial of Yemoo, it was found out that he was tortured to make all those admissions of various robberies. Yemoo actually was a notorious motor park tout and the police felt the only way to get him out of the society was to torture him to accept being an armed robber. Despite his proclivity in condemning accused robbers to death, Justice Oshodi saw through the set-up and rather sent Yemoo to imprisonment. Th...

Nigeria Celebrates 58th Independence Anniversary; Nigeria Still Under Servitude.

Image
By YUSUFF Oladeji Afeez (SIR-USEFUL) Before I attempt to analyse the theme/topic of this piece, the questions we should pose in our minds are : What is Independence? Has Nigeria gotten Independence? If truly Nigeria has gotten Independence, Why is she still in servitude? According to Merriam Webster Dictionary,  Independence is "the freedom from outside control or support". Independence is also seen as the time when a country or region gains political freedom from outside control. In the process of providing a definition to the word, "Independence", I noticed a  keyword, present,  in the definitions of Independence, supplied earlier in this piece,  which is "FREEDOM". And according to me, "Freedom is knowing the right thing, and doing the right thing,  which is the only way to  liberate one's self (someone)  from slavery." Since,  We,  Nigerians have deviated from the right things, and doing what is right, we have put ourselves under/in servi...

THE SAMBA BOYS EDGES THE RED DEVIL: BRAZIL AND BELGIUM COMBINED XI| By Olamide Samson OLALEKAN

Image
Brazilians edges The Red Devils: Brazil and Belgium Combined XI Brazil and Belgium meet for the first time at the quarter final stage of the world cup. The only previous occasion these sides met in a world cup was in the round of 16 in 2002, with Brazil winning 2 v 0 en route to winning the entire competition. Who makes my combined XI of the best 11 players at Kazana Arena on Friday night? Goalkeeper: ALISSON BECKER (BRA)| The two sides have wonderful shot stoppers, but Becker edges Courtois with the number of clean sheets kept. So, I’ll have Alisson Becker in goal. Right Back: FAGNER (BRA)| The right full back takes the right side of the back four. He has more intercepts and tackles won, more than Belgium’s Thomas Meunier Centre Back: THIAGO SILVA (BRA)| The 33 years old experienced and versatile defender takes the nod ahead of Vincent Kompany, who does not have as much intercepts as Silva Centre Back: JAN VERTONGHEN (BEL)| The Tottenham defender is the only Belgian in...
