NAOSS (OGUN) OAU: Juxtaposition of Indigent and Indigenous Members.
By: Lasisi Oluwatimilehin (Tee-Blessing)
According to Wikitionary, an indigent is an adjective which means "Poor, destitute, in need or utterly lacking something specified.
It was on this ground that the executives of the National Association of Ogun State Students (NAOSS), OAU chapter, liased with an ex-lawmaker, Hon. Ladi Adebutu, to solicit his help in the payment of fees of some members of the association
A list of thirty-four students were sent to the NAOSS WhatsApp page in February and the students whose names had appeared were asked to provide their e-portal information.
However, it eventually turned out that the good news was a short living one for some of the promised students as some of them eventually didn't get the promised 'manna'.
While speaking with some of the affected students, it was gathered that although a news had initially stated that it was fifty students that were paid for, only the list of thirty four (34) students was known to the entire NAOSSITES.
And even at that, not all the thirty four students eventually got the opportunity.
One of the affected students said, "When I got the information regarding the payment, I was happy to eventually ease the burden of payment off my parents shoulder. But, when I heard that they had started paying, I called the President to ask about my payment and he told me that they had already paid for those they wanted to pay for. He said that they had conducted an interview for the others whose names were on the list sent to the WhatsApp group page. He said that those of us that were not available for the screening were not reachable when they tried to call us for the screening, but, the fact is that I never got a call from anybody neither did I see any information on the WhatsApp page regarding it."
Another students whom we spoke to said, "Initially I was reluctant to supply my e-portal password because I was suspecting that something was fishy about the news. I eventually did though. And when we were about to ballot for bed space and the payment had not yet been made, I decided to pay the money first so that I could get bed space. My thoughts was that I would get the money when they begin to pay. When I chatted the president up on the issue he said that it is not possible to pay for me again since I had already paid and I tried to talk him to replace my name with that of one of my friend who couldn't afford to pay his fees yet and was also an indigene but he said that it is not possible".
A statement from the Treasurer of the association stated that the scholarship opportunity was for 'indigents' and not just the indegenes.
Also, the list released to the WhatsApp page of the association contained thirty four(34) students and a news said fifty, how were the additional sixteen students gotten? And how was the initial thirty four students (which comprises of the presidents and some of his cabinet) selected?
Were they all 'indigents' or just indegenes?
I would like the president to tell us, who care to listen, why the date and time for the screening wasn't sent to the group where the first list was sent? And we also wish to know why the final list was not known to the entire members of the association.
In order not to soil the good name of the President and his cabinet, a quick and truthful response is required.
Remember, the god of pen is watching.
