Venice was able to avoid being placed on the United Nation's world heritage sites in danger list

Image
Venice was able to avoid being placed on the United Nation's world heritage sites in danger list after it banned cruise ships from the area. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) met in China on Thursday and decided it would not put Venice on the list. It said it would reconsider the issue in 2023, The Associated Press reported. Italian Culture Minister Dario Franceschini said the government’s ban on huge cruise ships traveling through waterways in Venice facing St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doges Palace was the reason Venice avoided the list.  “Now, the global attention on Venice must remain high, and it is everyone’s duty to work for the protection of the lagoon and identify a sustainable development path for this unique reality,” Franceschini said. UNESCO had previously said part of the consideration for Venice to be put on the list was cruise ships traveling in the waterways, according to the AP. However, the Italian government ...

A female TV presenter from southern Afghanistan hides her identity for security concerns

Image
A female TV presenter from southern Afghanistan hides her identity for security concerns as she gives an interview to The Associated Press in Kabul, Afghanistan, Feb. 3, 2021. A coalition of more than two dozen U.S. news outlets and press freedom organizations is calling on the U.S. government to help protect Afghans who worked with foreign media and may face risks from the Taliban as a result.   Letters to President Joe Biden and top House and Senate leaders called on the United States to establish a visa program for local journalists and stringers who worked with American news outlets.    Many of these media workers fear retaliation from the Taliban as a result of their association with the U.S. media, the letter said.   Afghanistan has long been one of the most dangerous countries for the media, but threats and risks have increased since the start of peace talks between the Afghan government and Taliban in September 2020, and the U.S. troop w...

US sanctions Cuban security chief and special forces over crackdown on protests

Image
Biden moves to pressure government over alleged human rights abuses amid biggest demonstrations in decades. Cuban Americans participate in a demonstration to show support for protesters in Cuba, in front of the Versailles restaurant in Miami on Wednesday. The US has imposed sanctions on a Cuban security minister and an interior ministry special forces unit for alleged human rights abuses in a crackdown on anti-government protests this month. The move marked the first concrete steps by Joe Biden’s administration to apply pressure on Cuba’s Communist government as it faces calls from US lawmakers and the Cuban American community to show greater support for the biggest protests to hit the island in decades. The speed with which the administration has crafted new sanctions further signals Biden is highly unlikely to soften the US approach to Cuba any time soon after his predecessor, Donald Trump, rolled back a historic Obama-era détente with Havana. “This is just the beginning,...

Oval Invincibles beat Manchester Originals for the second night in a row in The Hundred

Oval Invincibles beat Manchester Originals for the second night in a row in The Hundred; Curran brothers and Sam Billings impress on Thursday night as Carlos Brathwaite's 37 for Originals in vain; Originals batter Tom Lammonby takes superb catch to dismiss Jason Roy. It was déjà vu from the opening night with Oval Invincibles beating Manchester Originals again! A day after the London side's women's team had triumphed against their rivals from up north, the men did the same. Originals would have fancied their chances after limiting Invincibles to 145 from their 100 balls - captain Sam Billings' 49 off 30 balls the pick of the batters - but the home side's bowlers had other ideas. The Curran brothers, Sam and Tom, were among those to make it hard for the visitors to score, with Originals ending on 136 from their 100 balls at a sold-out and sun-baked Kia Oval. There was still hope for Originals with 19 needed from five balls and Carlos 'Remember the Name' Brath...

"To defeat a player like Djokovic you have to do things that very few players can do. You have to outrun Nole and dominate him. I see myself as someone who may have a chance to beat him. If you play like him, you will lose. You have to play at a high level and hope that he is not successful that day. I think that the best players always have that pressure. It is always positive to feel that way. If you get good results in tournaments of this type, you know 100% that you are one one of the best tennis players of the moment," Zverev told Sportschau. "I have already said repeatedly that I am going to Tokyo to compete for a medal for Germany. That does not mean at all that I am going to win, but it is true that I see myself as one of the favorites to win it all," Zverev unde...

IN THE BLUR BY MIMI

IN THE BLUR With a pure intention I set out on the path Aware of insecurity within me I still desire to push Eager to set a foot in the outside For chokeness slips into my reality unconsciously Within the walls I thought I did be safe Severed from my uncertainty I let the wall collapse into scrambles Held by fear which seems to be the norms Every of my steps becomes a droplet of my blood Aggressed with my own surroundings Every trait of humanity fades away Wrecked in my own blood Choked with my gasp of hurt Blinded with fury of every scar I let go of my conscience Calling forth every piece of demon in me Irreversibly I observe my extinction As my air becomes mix with the flame of solitude Dripping with blood not mine Flesh clinging to fangs built over time Aura mixed with horror I became a shadow of my real self By: Miracle Oluwatomiwa (MIMI)

Dentist shares 'secrets' to good dental health – and brushing your teeth isn't one

CHIEF orthodontist Dr Khaled Kasem offers up some surprising secrets to achieve good dental health – and it’s not the traditional brushing your teeth, flossing, and avoiding sugary snacks (although they all help). Based at Impress Orthodontics, Dr Kasem pointed out that food can play a powerful part in dental health. For example, dairy – especially cheese – can strengthen your teeth. Dr Kasam credits calcium and vitamin D (found in dairy) for contributing to stronger gnashers. And if you’d like pearly whites, Dr Kasam has some good news. “The lactic acid found in cheese can help to lift stains from tooth enamel,” he said. Another surprising way to improve your dental health is to eat chocolate – dark chocolate, to be specific. “Powerful anti-bacterial agents” are found in dark chocolate, which can help to fight cavities, confirmed Dr Kasam. “However, this doesn’t mean you should be indulging in chocolate, as you only need a small amount to benefit,” he cautioned. As for blueberries, th...

More than a dozen other French politicians were reportedly targeted in a scheme denied by Morocco. Hours after Paris prosecutors launched an investigation into allegations that Morocco’s intelligence agencies used Israeli malware to hack the phones of several French journalists, Le Monde reported that Macron was also targeted by Rabat’s agents in 2019, along with former Prime Minister Edouard Philippe and 14 other ministers. The use of the ‘Pegasus’ malware, developed by Israeli firm NSO, to snoop on the phone communications of politicians, journalists, activists and business figures was revealed by Amnesty International and Forbidden Stories, a French investigative organization.
