“THERE IS BARELY ANY HOPE INSIGHT FOR ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES TO HOLD
UNTIL JUNE 2022” IFE STUDENT UNION REVEALED
After the declaration of ASUU strike which is being extended
by 8 more weeks, the great Ife student union has made a release on Tuesday March 15 stating
their position on the strike.
Making a recall on
the 2020 incidence which started up with COVID-19 pandemic, before ASUU strike
joined the chaos, it was stated that the ASUU dealt a big blow to the
education, as it started the same way it is starting at the moment and with the
recent extension of the strike, there is barely any hope in sight for
academic activities to hold until June 2022 when there is no even certainties
that the strike would have ended by then. The strike which started off as
warning strike with the aim of getting the Federal Government to redeem its
pledges of honoring the 2009 agreement and also to make sure that the use of
home-grown University and Transparency and Accountability System (UTAS) is
effective rather than the use of Integrated Payroll and Personal Information
System (IPPIS).
On that note, informing all union members, past and present
comrades of the union and the general public, the student union stated that
their position on the strike is that the federal government should honor the
agreement it has had with ASUU saying
“our position over the ASUU-FG imbroglio is that the Federal
Government should honor the agreement it has had with ASUU. We take this
position unapologetically, as this issue highly constitutes an impediment to
the academic success of members of our union and by implication their growth as
humans.
We are, by this release sensitizing members of our union and
the general public, as Intellectual Fighters for Emancipation (IFE) that we are
intolerant of the continued failure of the Federal Government in addressing the
demands of ASUU so that the strike may be called off and classes resumed. As a
union, we consider this as a disaster to the lives of our members and it must
be addressed by the Federal Government as a matter of urgency.”
They went ahead to remind the federal Government that seems
to be forgetting what matters, that education is universally recognized right
and that its attitude only shows that it does not respect this right. And as a
union, they can’t be silent about this. Quoting DR Martins Luther “Our lives
begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter” our education
matters.
Bringing the release into conclusion, the union went
ahead to solicit for the unflinching supports of union members and students
across all other tertiary institutions that the fight may be collectively won.
“We must remind ourselves that there is victory for us in
this struggle, that if we fight, we will win. United we go back to classes,
divided we are deprived of our rights to education.
