OAU Inter-faculties Sports Festival Ends in Style
Alex Ferguson-inspired PG Men show Edu Boiz how dogged & resilent Champions can be.
Report
Rain! Rain!! Rain!!! Last year's final saw a rain of goals but this time around, it was the gods of soccer sending their blessings from above with water pouring heavily from the cloudy skies as the Post-Graduate College Football Team were set to lock horns with Faculty of Education All-Stars.
The pitch of the Estadio d' Mainbowl was waterlogged but dried up within 5 minutes after the rain stopped proving yet again why it has been considered arguably the best natural grass pitch in the country.
The finals of this year's tournament had lots of dignitaries in attendance including the Vice Chancellor of the institution, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede; Senator Iyiola Omisore; Dean of the Division of Students' Affairs, Prof. Aransi; Provost of the Post-Graduate College and a host of others.
The game was kicked off by the VC at around 1625hrs with Ife Edu in deep green tops & shorts, yellow stripes and hoses while Ife PG came in their traditional sky blue tops and shorts with white hoses.
Few minutes into the game, the ball was snatched from the experienced, stocky Ife Edu defender Tope and a teasing cross was delivered into the box by Ife PG's Bayou, only to be deflected by Ife Edu's full back Tope, beyond the on-rushing goalie and into the back of the net in what proved to be the difference between the two high classy teams at the end of the day.
Ife Edu pressed, dominated and created lots of chances but the versatility, commitment, tenacity and never-say-never attitude of Ife PG's Otua, Ebire, Navicular, Addah, Icexiq, Ife and a host of others was too repelling for the attack force of the six-time champions.
The half-time saw the Athletics events light up the closing ceremony of the OAUISF with Faculty of Social Sciences claiming gold in the 100m male & female categories won by Enoch and Teniola respectively. Faculty of Agriculture however secured the silver and Bronze in the 100m finals as well.
The 4 × 100m relay gold was claimed by Social Sciences with Tayo, Kunle and Enoch all making up for a not-really-fast fourth runner; Faculty of Agriculture claimed the silver once again with Micheal, Jackson, James and Donald while Faculty of Education claimed the bronze to end the Athletics events.
The second half of the finals saw lots of pleasant exchange of ball-passing around with Toheeb, BamiDave, Alarape, Bobo, Maleek all dominating possession but the Juventus-like defence of the Big Men was too stubborn and brave for the attackers Crespo and Ayo-Olami.
Ife Edu had won the same fixture way back in 2014 in the finals as they won the tournament 3 consecutive times but reverse was the case this time around as the Post Graduate College Men stood their ground to record their first gold in the football category of the OAU InterFaculties Games.
Congratulations to the Ife PG soccer team as their months of struggles & trainings, their blood, sweat & tears were not in vain.
Kudos to their fans for their relentless cheers and supports as well.
