The management of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile –Ife, has reinstated two students who were suspended last year and also reactivated the E - portals of four other students respectively.
The Vice Chancellor of the University, Prof Eyitope Ogunbodede, made this known in a meeting convened by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof Isiaka Aransi, which was attended also by top officers of the university, members of the Association of Campus Journalists (ACJ-OAU), National Associational Nigerian Students (NANS) Southwest Zonal Coordinator, and the affected students.
Omole Ibukun, a final year student of Civil Engineering and Oluwalade Babatunde, a 300l student of English, were reinstated after being suspended for their involvement in the power outage protest of October last year.
Also, the E-portals of four other students, Kazeem Olalekan, Oyedeji Samson, Gbenga Oloniniran and Afolabi Samuel, was ordered to be reactivated by the university’s Vice-Chancellor. He also commented that they should be allowed to register courses without any penalty.
The Vice-Chancellor revealed that he is not interested in the victimization of students; he made it known at the meeting that it was not the school management that charged the students to court, rather it was the State who did.
However, Prof Ogunbodede said that he will not reinstate the former Union Leaders, Tosin Jacob and Adedayo Emmanuel, who were suspended for fighting over fund. They are currently on a two semester suspension.
When asked about the reinstatement of the Students Union, he said, "I will love to reinstate the union, even if it means rusticating anyone who does not want the union to be reinstated".
“I do not like a school without an active student union, which was why I did not proscribe the Hall Executive Council (HEC), alongside the Central Executive Council and the Students Representative Council”, the Vice-Chancellor added.
Prof. Aransi, the Dean of Students Affairs, at the end of the meeting, thanked the Vice-Chancellor on the new development. He then advised the reinstated students to be of good behaviours.
