ACCOMODATION CRISIS IN OAU
Accommodation crisis
Obafemi Awolowo
University was established between 1961 and 1962 and since then the number of
student admitted yearly has been increasing even up till date. When the
customers available are more than the goods the needs of the customers is
affected such is the situation in OAU.
OAU host a
community of about 5,000 staff and over 26,000 students, this number is
actually enormous for the hostels available on campus to accommodate the
students. As good accommodation and comfortability is essential for students’
wellbeing, they are left with no choice than to hunt for accommodation outside
campus which is very expensive, time consuming and stressful.
The expenses
OAU schools fees
ranges from 21,000 to 30,000 per session but securing accommodation of campus
can be as high as 150, 000 and in some cases 200,000. This actually due to the
fact that majority of the landlord take advantage of the competition between
the students to hike the price and students are have no other alternative than
to pay, the agency fee by agents also add to the increase in accommodation
price off campus. Freshers unable to secure accommodation on campus are mostly
vulnerable, of cause they know less about how the system and as a result
dubious agent take advantage of them.
The distance
Students that can’t afford houses nearby find refuge in places as far as phase 2, sabo, opa lagere, eleweran, modomo e.t.c. The farther the distance the lower the price and closer the distance the higher the price, the more reason majority of the houses close to campus are expensive.
The time
consuming
The time of most
students that stays of campus is badly affected, 90% of the students can afford
a ride, they do not only think about the lectures they are having but also how
to get to the lecture room on time, some students house is about an hour trek
to campus and close to 20 minutes by bus.
The school management
is really trying to find a lasting solution to this accommodation crisis and we
hope to see a positive in the days ahead
