Are you asthmatic or has a friend or family member who has asthma?
Here are some tips you might need to help them with someday;
Asthma is a condition in which a person's airways become inflamed, narrow, swell and produce extra mucus and thus makes breathing difficult. Asthma can be minor or may be a life threatening attack.
Let us assume you have a friend who is asthmatic or if you are asthmatic and have an asthma attack and do not have your inhaler or medications with you as at that point in time, here are some things you can do to suppress the attack;
1.Call for help from a medical personnel, while waiting for help, carry out the following;
2.Sit up straight: this keeps airways open. It allows air to more efficiently enter into the lungs. Avoid lying down while having an asthma attack, this may constrict breathing and can make matter worse.
3. Remain calm: try to stay calm as much as you can or help the person remain calm as much as you can as panic and stress can worsen the symptoms. Some cool music can even do the magic.
4.Steady your breathing: try to take slow, steady breaths during an attack. Ensure you breathe slowly through your nose as opposed to your mouth.
5.Move away from triggers: presence of asthma triggers can sure make matter worse. Common triggers include allergens like pollen, pets, certain foods and even dust. Exercise, stress, anxiety, tobacco smoke, medications like aspirin, respiratory tract infections like common cold, flu can also be classified as common triggers. With all these been listed, it is very important to know your triggers.
In some cases, one might have the inhaler but probably the attack is really severe and can't help his/herself with it, if you are a friend,family member or even a passer-by, here is how you can save the life of such individual..
Step one: Adjust the person's posture so that he/she is sitting upright. Help the individual stay calm, encourage them to take slow and steady breaths.
Step two: Take one puff from the rescue inhaler every 30-60 seconds. You can only give a maximum of ten puffs.
Step three: Call for help if there is no changes after administering the inhaler.
Step four: if no help is forthcoming after fifteen minutes, repeat step two.
Step five: after using the inhaler, it is important to rinse the mouth out. This prevents side effects like oral thrush.
Asthma is a chronic disease disease and it's crisis births unexpected and unplanned expenses, absence from school, work and one's social life and sometimes leads to death.
As an asthmatic patient, ensure to take your asthma medications as prescribed by your doctor, exercise regularly to keep fit. Be in control, get an asthma action plan and make sure a close friend or family member knows about it.. It is advisable to keep the plan on your phone in case of an emergency.
