Rangers face travel nightmare as Malmo shocker means mammoth Europa League journey ahead of Celtic clash
Rangers face a mammoth trip to either Kazakhstan or Armenia following their Champions League result just days before facing Celtic.
Rangers face a monumental trip to the far reaches of Europe just days before they face Celtic in the first derby clash of the season.
The Premiership champions were 1-0 up against 10-man Malmo but collapsed in the second half to crash out of the Champions League.
Alfredo Morelos opened the scoring for Rangers on the night with a fine header after 20 minutes.
Malmo hit a quick fire double after the break, though, like they did in Sweden last week that was a devastating blow to the Gers.
An Antonio Colak double fired Malmo into the lead with goals within four minutes of each other.
Following their result in the third qualifying round of the Champions League Rangers will now face the trip to either Kazakhstan or Armenia in the play-off round of the Europa League.
They will have to face the winners of Kairat Almaty of Kazakhstan or Alashkert of Armenia.
The former is more than 3,500 miles from Ibrox, while the latter would entail a round trip of close to 5,000 miles.
Celtic faced the Armenian side over two legs in a Champions League qualifier in 2018. They won both matches comfortably after recording a 3-0 win both home and away.
It will be a tie that will cause Steven Gerrard headaches with the first match against bitter rivals Celtic just three days after the second leg away tie.
Celtic will face a much shorter trip if they make it past Jablonec in their third round qualifying match and will face AZ Alkmaar of the Netherlands.
That gives Ange Postecoglou's side a huge advantage going into the first clash between the two sides of the season.
Last campaign Rangers, on-route to stopping Celtic from achieving ten in a row, defeated the Hoops in three of their four league games, with the fourth ending in a draw.
The Gers also dumped Celtic out of the Scottish Cup last campaign at Ibrox, in April.
